Who needs this credential?

Field service technicians, drone/UAS technical support engineers, product support and RMA/depot repair technicians, deployment and integration technicians supporting commercial, delivery, public-safety, and defense UAS fleets.

Prerequisites

  • Strong hands-on troubleshooting and mechanical/electronics aptitude
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate is commonly expected (to flight-test after service)
  • Comfort with customer-facing support, documentation, and travel for field roles

How to get certified

  1. 1

    Build a core electronics & systems foundation

    Learn brushless motors and ESCs, LiPo battery packs and charging safety, flight controllers, GPS/IMU sensors, radios/telemetry, gimbals, and payload integration. A technician diploma or military electronics background maps directly.

    Earn your FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate

    Most field service and support roles expect you to legally test-fly a repaired aircraft. Part 107 is the standard baseline credential (see our Part 107 guide).

    Get platform / manufacturer training

    UAS support is highly platform-specific. Pursue manufacturer or employer type-specific training for the exact airframes you'll support (delivery, inspection, public-safety, or defense platforms).

    Develop the support & documentation skillset

    Field service and tech support roles reward strong troubleshooting workflows, RMA/return handling, clear ticket and maintenance documentation, and customer communication — not just wrench time.

Field service vs. tech support vs. depot repair

These related roles all sit on the technician/support side of the industry rather than the engineering side:

  • Field Service Technician / Engineer — travels to customer or operational sites to deploy, commission, troubleshoot, and repair drone systems in the field.
  • Technical Support Engineer — resolves customer issues remotely (phone/email/ticket), diagnoses failures, and escalates to engineering when needed.
  • Product Support / RMA / Depot Technician — performs bench diagnosis and repair of returned units, manages RMA workflows, and feeds failure data back to the product team.
  • Deployment / Integration Technician — installs, configures, and integrates UAS hardware, ground control stations, and payloads for new customers.

Why this is one of the sector's biggest hands-on opportunities

As drone fleets scale across delivery, inspection, agriculture, public safety, and defense, every deployed aircraft needs people to keep it flying. Field service and support headcount grows directly with fleet size — and unlike engineering roles, these jobs are open to electronics technicians, veterans with avionics/electronics MOSs, A&P mechanics, and IT/hardware support professionals without requiring an aerospace engineering degree.

How it relates to A&P and UAS maintenance

There is no single FAA 'drone technician' license today. Field service overlaps heavily with UAS maintenance (see that guide) but leans more toward customer-facing deployment, troubleshooting, and support. An A&P certificate is not required for most small-UAS work, but it is a strong differentiator for larger or certificated platforms and for employers that value formal maintenance discipline.
